  • Having trouble getting the hang of left turns? Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Most new drivers struggle when first learning how to make turns because it’s a skill that requires both motor skills and mental multitasking. In other words, there’s a lot going on during every turn that the body and brain has to manage simultaneously. Join driving instructors Alejandra and Micah as they walk you through the very basics of how to make a left turn in residential neighborhoods. They'll cover a lot in this video, including:

    I’m going to watch all your videos! I’m in my 40s and just learning to drive. My issue is that friends/family/some instructors focus on the driving portion of driving lessons. Very few explain how this or that is done. Though my instructor is good there are still many things I’m not sure about because it wasn’t explained. This type of left turn for example. So I get nervous because I’m unsure what to do and start making mistakes. As a result I failed my 1st road test, I was so nervous I was visibly shaking. I don’t blame anyone, just knew I wasn’t ready and the instructor believed I was and had me scheduled.
    Thank you for being so detailed in this video. It’s the first of many I’ve seen where all the details of HOW to perform a move is explained. Hence I’m watching all the videos. 😊

    I’ve watched a bunch of videos & this is by far the BEST - clear, concise, shows each step & shows each POV.
    question: for rolling left turns with oncoming traffic, would you not pull up to the middle of the intersection & then wait for the car to pass before turning?

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  Год назад +1

      Thank you so much and great question! Regarding how far you should pull into the intersection while waiting to turn left: it really depends on how big the intersection is. You should always AT LEAST pull out until your left-mirror passes the curb (like this: ruclips.net/video/QEds_x1c6Ow/видео.html), but on wider intersections you will probably go out a little further, about 1/4 or 1/3 of the way into the intersection. I would not recommend going ½ way into the intersection - that will be too far and if there is traffic across from you also turning left, you will be in each other’s way (if you can envision that).
      Hope that helps!

    Nice video. Watching many videos, I noticed there are variations in push and pull and hand over hand. On other videos, when doing a push pull and turning left, it will begin with the left hand going at 12 oclock, then pull at 6 oclock with the right hand meeting it there. What's the best push-pull method for beginners?

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  Год назад

      Hello! Great observation and you are 100% correct, there are many ways for a proper turn to be executed. Sometimes that will depend on what your local government requires, other times it will be a personal preference. We teach our students hand-over-hand first because we want them to fully understand how to control the vehicle. Once they have the hang of that, we teach the push pull or shuffle method because it can be a little safer when it comes to airbags deploying. In general, this is the best advice I can give you, whatever method you use:
      - Always use two hands if you can, and position your hands on opposite sides of the wheel
      - When you choose a hand position, use the one that makes you feel most in control of the vehicle. Depending on your body size, arm length, and the size of your steering wheel, that can vary from person to person. In general, 10 and 2, 9 and 3, and 8 and 4 are all good positions, but the lower down on the wheel you go, the safer for when an airbag deploys and the less likely you'll over-steer.
      - If you are comfortable with push-pull, that is a good choice because it adds additional safety for airbag deployment.
      Hope that helps!

    PLEASE I HAVE A QUESTION I GENUINELY NEED AN ANSWER FOR I CANNOT FIND IT ANYWHERE!!! ..... at 16:00 is where i can find the best example... are you required BY LAW to stay onto the furthest left lane when making that turn or can you come onto the right lane mid intersection?
    I had a situation at a double-left lane turning onto a 3 lane highway where the furthest left lane car started coming into the middle lane when i was on the right left turn lane going to the middle lane and he ran me off the middle lane to the furthest 3rd right lane on the highway.. if he wouldve hit me by law who wouldve been at fault?

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  3 месяца назад

      Hello! Great question! Generally, when you're making a left turn from a left-turn lane, you are expected by law to stay in the lane that corresponds to your turn (i.e., the leftmost lane unless otherwise specified by road markings). If you're turning from a rightmost left-turn lane (in a double left-turn scenario), you typically can move into the middle lane once you've made the turn, as long as it's safe and legal in your area. Always check for signs, lane markings, and signals to ensure you're following the correct procedure.
      In the situation you described, if the car in the leftmost turn lane started veering into your lane and pushed you off the road, they could be considered at fault for improper lane changing or failure to yield, especially if they didn’t leave enough space for your vehicle. However, the exact fault can depend on local traffic laws and specific road conditions. If such an incident happens, it’s always a good idea to contact local authorities to determine fault, especially if there's any dispute.
      The best advice is to always stay aware of surrounding traffic and be prepared for unexpected movements from other drivers. Safe driving is about anticipating what others might do! Hope this helps!

    In some cars you have to turn the steering wheel more just to make certain turns that confuse me. Some steering wheels be lighter than others it’s so confusing

      Very true! All cars are designed differently, it might help to practice driving in a safe area to get used to the car's steering before moving on to bigger intersections.

    What should I do if someone is behind me ? What if they hit me from the back if I brake ? Every time someone is behind me I get nervous and stop in the middle of the road because you are telling me to keep looking in my rear view mirror . And the guy behind me starts honking at me and yelling at me which makes the situation worse . I like rest of your video .

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  29 дней назад

      Hello! We understand where you're coming from-it’s completely normal to feel nervous when someone is driving closely behind you. The best thing to do is stay focused on your own safe driving. Checking your mirrors is important for awareness, but it shouldn’t cause you to stop in the middle of the road. Instead, maintain a steady speed and follow traffic laws. If a driver behind you is honking or acting aggressively, try to stay calm and avoid reacting. We hope you won’t have to face this situation and wish you safe driving!

    I am unclear on why blind spot checks are needed on left turns. Do you also look over left shoulder before moving into left turning lane where center median is present? Thank you guys

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  Год назад +1

      Hello! That is a great observation and question, and one many students ask... "why are we looking over our left shoulders before going into left turn lanes?". Checking our blind spots before changing lanes allows us to see what we may have missed in our mirrors. Entering a left turn lane is technically a lane change, so we need to check our blind spots first, just in case. For example, an impatient car behind you might be trying to get into the left turn lane and pass you quickly on the left (this has actually happened to me a few times). Also, checking over your shoulder allows you to quickly scan the bike lanes and sidewalk for bikes, scooters, and pedestrians who may be approaching the intersection where you plan to turn. When there is a center median, it might seem counter intuitive to check over your shoulder, but the reality is you never know what might be in your blind spot... a motorcycle or cyclist could sneak between you and the median, or even a pedestrian might be on the actual median itself that you need to be aware of.
      It might seem like overkill to always check over your shoulder before left turns, but I guarantee you that one day it will pay off when you find something hiding out in your blind spot. Hope that helps!

    Tip: go to the most left lane when turning to left, the chances of getting accident is near to 0 because you will want to get “closer” to the car is facing opposite to you.

So , i don't make a decision correctly. Mostly, i stop .But i failed twice . What is your suggestion to make a good decision ?When should I turn when I see the cars ? I check the right mirrors. "I stop as soon as I see the cars but i failed. Where should i follow to make sure to turn . I can not calculate the traffic distance to turn .Your ideas is very important for me. Thank you so much . I live in Turkey by the way

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  3 месяца назад

      Hello to our friends in Turkey! Thank you for your support and question. Turning left when traffic is coming from the right can be challenging, but here’s the key rule to keep in mind:
      ✅ Never Make Anyone Slow Down
      If your turn would cause a driver to even tap their brakes, it’s NOT safe to turn. You must wait for a gap that lets you turn without interrupting the flow of traffic. That’s the golden rule.
      ✅ Look for Traffic Waves
      Traffic usually comes in waves. After a group of cars passes, there’s often a short break before the next wave. Be ready for that clear gap, and turn confidently when you see it.
      The key to passing your test is showing that you can wait for a safe opening. Practice this, and you’ll improve quickly! Let us know how it goes!

    if you run a yellow light on your road test because the person behind you is speeding up would you fail?

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  8 месяцев назад

      Hello! Great question! If you enter an intersection during a yellow light, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll fail the test, especially if you didn’t run a red light. The examiner will consider whether your decision was safe and reasonable given the circumstances. While there is a possibility of failing if your action is seen as unsafe, every situation is different with many variable factors involved. My best advice is to always prioritize safety and avoid taking risks that could put you in a tricky situation. Hopefully you aren't put in a "gray-area" during your test. Hope this helps!

    i tried turning a little bit when i reached the curb and the instructor kept yelling at me telling me to keep my wheels straight until the front of the car reaches the yellow line before turning the wheel very abruptly all the way left. He wants me to do this perfectly and I don't get why because I make the same turn by steering slowly left as well.

    I thought you were supposed to cross wrists, not arms?

    • @DriversEdDirect
      @DriversEdDirect  Месяц назад

      Thanks for your question! In the hand-over-hand steering technique, your arms cross over each other as you turn the wheel. This happens naturally. For example, if you're turning left, your right hand will push the steering wheel to the left, and your left hand will cross over to pull the wheel and continue the turn. As a result, your wrists will also cross during this motion. This is a key part of the technique, allowing you to make sharp, controlled turns.
      While some people refer to 'crossing wrists,' in reality, it's the arms that cross over each other as you steer, with the wrist crossing happening naturally due to the arm movement.
      At Drivers Ed Direct, we teach both hand-over-hand and push-pull techniques. Hand-over-hand is especially useful for tight turns or emergency maneuvers, while push-pull minimizes arm crossing and provides stability for routine driving.
      I hope this clears things up-feel free to ask if you have more questions!
